Why am I experiencing knee pain?

Knee pain can be caused by a variety of factors, and it can sometimes be difficult to determine why you are experiencing it. Your knee is a hinge joint that moves forward and backward. When your knees are in proper alignment, standing, walking, running, and dancing should be easier. When pain gets in the way, your ability to move freely can be limited.

A thorough evaluation by a licensed physical therapist is the best way to determine the true cause of your knee pain.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Our evaluation helps identify the factors contributing to your symptoms and guides your recovery plan.

Knee Bursitis

Injury can inflame the bursae, small fluid-filled sacs that cushion the outside of the knee joint. Bursitis can keep tendons and ligaments from gliding smoothly over the joint.

Patellar Tendinitis

The patellar tendon connects the kneecap to the shinbone and helps you kick, run, and jump. It may become irritated and inflamed, especially in runners, skiers, cyclists, and jumping sports.

Torn Meniscus

The meniscus is a shock absorber between the shinbone and thighbone. The thick, rubbery cartilage may tear when the knee twists quickly while bearing weight.

ACL Injury

The ACL is one of four ligaments connecting the thighbone to the shinbone. Injuries are more likely in sports and activities that require quick changes in direction.

Knee Fractures

A fall or car accident can damage the bones of the knee, particularly the kneecap. With osteoporosis, a knee fracture may occur from simply taking the wrong step.

Finding Knee Pain Treatment with Physical Therapy

Knee pain does not have to keep you from accomplishing your goals. During your first appointment, one of our physical therapists will examine your knees for signs of misalignment or structural damage, along with your stance, posture, gait, and range of motion.

You and your physical therapist will collaborate to improve overall joint function so you can return to normal activities with more flexibility and less pain. Your therapist may prescribe exercises to strengthen and stabilize your knees and use treatments that relieve pain and promote healing of injured tissues.

Physical therapy at Comprehensive Physical Therapy may also help you avoid costly and painful surgery.

A personalized plan can help address pain, movement limitations, strength, and function.
